Make your one room house cosy

So you finally feel that it’s time to move out of your parents’ home to become independent. This can be quite challenging, especially if you have limited resources.

At times, all you can afford is a one roomhouse. But just because it’s one room, doesn’t mean you cannot make it look homely and vibrant. Depending on the space, there are a few interior design tricks you could employ to make it accommodate all your belongings, and still not look cluttered.

Ann Mirembe, an interior designer at Ann’s Metal Workshop, Interior and Ex designers explains that you don’t need to have many things in the room. All you need are the basics and when you play around with them, you can have a homely single room.

Paint will help you define the walls of your room. Mirembe explains that you can make use of three different colours, for your walls. Paint two different colours on each side of the walls. Then have the ceiling painted in white.
The white on the ceiling will make the room appear bigger. The colours you choose depend on your personality and tastes. If you don’t want to use paint, you can use wall paper as they come in different prints.

Position your bed, on the side of the room without a mirror. You can have some colourful accessories like duvets, and cushions. These will help brighten up your bed as well as the room.

If you have a television, the designer advises that you place it in one corner of the room, preferably on a stand. “The stand should have shelves as these will help keep other items like your DVDs, and magazines. That way, you can save space. You can then have your refrigerator in another corner. “Placing the appliances in different corners prevents cluttering,” she explains.

Yes, décor accessories work wonders when positioned nicely in your one room house. Photo frames, lamp shades, and the floor lamps are some of the accessories you could start with. These come in various shades, sizes, and styles. It all depends on how you choose them. You could also think of investing in a few trollies and cabinets.

These can help hold many of your assortments without taking up a lot of space. You can have a trolley for your television, the utensils, and a shoe rack.

MIRRORS and frames

The other trick you could use is mirrors. you can place it on one side of the wall, in the room so that is reflects what is one the other side which can be a nice photo frame.

Rugs and carpets

Invest in a carpet. If possible, get one that can cover the entire room. This saves you the burden of a dusty floor, but also makes the room appear vibrant. However, if you can’t afford to buy a whole carpet, as they are usually expensive, you can invest in rugs. These can be placed besides your bed, or at the doorway.
