Navy is the new black for your kitchen

You can use navy blue in the kitchen on items such as the cabinets, wall, floor or the lighting. However, you should blend it with bright colours so that the kitchen does not end up looking dark.

What is navy?
Navy blue is a dark shade of colour blue. The difference between black and navy is that when placed under the sunlight, the black gets slightly closer to grey whereas navy gets more depth of the blue.

Where can it be placed?
Paul Mabirizi, a sales manager Sadolin Paint products at Hardware World, Ntinda explains that navy can be applied in bedrooms, dinning and living rooms, kitchen, bathrooms and places of meditation or Yoga rooms. Albert Lapyem an interior designer at Critical Concepts Ltd says, “You can choose to place navy on the TV wall or in the living room but ensure to bring out the ascent since it is a dark colour it needs to pop out through photo frames hanged up on the wall, and can also be placed on kitchen walls and cabinetry.”

How to blend it
Mabirizi explains that Navy blue can be blended with white, light blue, orange, grey, creamy green and wood fittings brown. “Layered colours such as white and ivory contrast well when blended with navy colour as it is a dark colour which needs to be blended with bright colours,” Lapyem explains.

Using it in the kitchen
It could be put on floor tiles, kitchen worktop made of granite flashes of blue, kitchen diner chairs , kitchen curtains, kitchen chandeliers, kitchen rags, inky blue metro tiles on kitchen worktop wall accent, tall navy blue cupboards that stretch to the ceiling, navy kitchen table and linen.
“ If you choose to place navy on your kitchen walls, do not use too much of it because your kitchen will appear dark and dull, instead place it on the wall opposite your kitchen cabinets which can be painted white or ivory,” Lapyem adds.

How to choose shades for the cabinet?
According to colour experts, navy blue brings a twist of dark luxury; light blue adds airy coolness to the cabinets; for a cool –dark feel, go for navy or royal blue for one in a hot sunny weather. If it’s a light, playful, fun and airy look, you need to go for the middle and lighter shades of blue for example baby blue, cadet blue and Celestial blue.

What are some of the negative and positive associations with blue?
Positive associations include reliability and loyalty as we witness law enforcement units using it, it is associated with water, religious as it’s closely related to Virgin Mary in the Catholic Church, authority as the sky gods in Greece were known as Jupiter, Juno and Mercury, justice and perseverance as it is evidenced in the UN flag.
The negative associations include the commonly used phrase “Out of the blue,” which is suddenly reckless and thoughtful ideas. Navy also can be perceived as being rigid, deceitful, sad, old fashioned and too conservative.
