Options of caring for your carpet

Clean your carpets regularly and keep them away from water unless when washing to prevent them from emitting off a bad ordour in the house.

What you need to know:

Be tidy. Carpets make a room beautiful and comfortable. But they can allso be a menace if not well taken care of. Different carpets are cleaned differently so knowing how to tidy yours is vital.

Carpets are one of the most important features in a house because they help in adding decoration or colour to a room thus making it more comfortable. They also help in insulating a person’s feet from a cold tile or concrete floor as well as give the sitting room beauty and comfort. Once a proper blend is picked and taken care of, they give you the best look.
They come in different colours, pattern and fiber. In plastic, synthetic fibre and wool, caring for them depends on the carpet type.

Plastic carpets
For the plastic carpets, Mary Namukose an interior designer at Daffur Company Limited says clean them regularly with a rug and water because they can dry immediately. She also advises that you do not put hot things on the carpet because it will burn.
However, the daily cleaning is not enough says Namukose. “Take it outside and clean the floor where it sits at least once a month because they normally leave white marks on the floor that may damage it,” She advises.

Caring for synthetic fibre carpets
Yusuf Mongne, the director Daffur Company Limited, says synthetic fibre carpets need care as much as the woolen ones. Before washing them, first understand the material because some need manual and others machine washing
“Synthetic fibre carpets are the best for dust because they are made from artificial fibres that resist staining. They endure dust but need regular attention,” he says.

Woollen carpets
These easily get dirty. They get stained by the food spills, dirty feet or any other form of dirt. They are also sensitive to water and that they may even smell if water pours on them.
Depending on how they are cared for, they also sometimes lose shape and colour, so they need extra care to keep looking good and in their original shape.
Namukose says woolen carpets need more attention than any other carpets. Care should start right from the day of purchase. Choose a colour that suits your family, for example, if you have young children, do not buy a colour that easily gets dirty.

The most important care is giving it respect, don’t step on it with dirty feet, avoid putting hot things that damage it for example, hot sauce pans and flat irons, regulate the playing by children on the carpets and much that could destroy it” she says.
Namukose adds that most people think woollen carpets do not need regular cleaning but this is wrong. They need as much attention as the chairs and tables. Dust them every morning because cases they absorb a lot of dust.
Avoid putting heavy furniture on them for example heavy chairs because these damage them as well. Take them out for airing once in a while let’s say weekends and clean the floor where it has been well.

John Camara a manual carpet cleaner says he usually advises his customers to use door mats in order to prevent soil from piling up under the carpet and to also perform vacuuming either daily or weekly for this will reduce dust from collecting under and on the carpet hence reducing much work in future
“Make sure you clean your carpets at least twice or thrice a year because over dirtening it will make it hard to clean it. After cleaning, make sure the carpet dries properly before putting it back in the house. This will prevent it from producing an un comfortable odours” he adds.
