Remodel your living space with ceiling fan

There are a number of things to look for when choosing a ceiling fan. They range from functional purposes such as cooling down the room and providing lighting to the area.

What you need to know:

Even if you are lucky enough to have an efficient AC system in your home, it might be a good idea to consider adding some fans. Ceiling fans are good because they allow you to control the temperature by room and are more energy efficient.

Remodelling a home can be an expensive venture especially if it is done all at once, with every room retouched at the same time. However, if you want a beautiful home but do not want to spend a colossal sum of money, you can start by remodelling one room at a time. The best place to start is the living room; after all, this is the room that is the first point of call for any visitor into your home.

Most people think remodelling a living room only involves changing or adding more lights, and then, changing the colour of the wall paint.
However, you do not have to be so elaborate. Installing a fan can be all it takes to make a difference between a room with modern décor and an ordinary one.

When a visitor sits in the sofa set, sooner or later, their eyes will stray to the ceiling. And you would not want them to see only a plain ceiling, right? The advantage of installing ceiling fans is that you can kill two birds with one stone.
First, you will solve the problem of heat and stuffiness in the living room to the comfort of your visitors. Secondly, the fans, if properly selected, will change the general appearance of the room.

The thing that turns people off ceilings fans is the idea that they all have to be white, heavy, and clumsy. However, there are newer versions on the market that match with modern décor.

Consider the height
To circulate air more effectively in the room, ceiling fans need to be hung about seven feet above the floor. However, Tracy Ssegujja, an interior designer, says the building styles in the Ugandan construction market rarely allow for high ceilings in a home.

“If your ceiling is low, then you need to install huge fans that can sit close to the ceiling. This is especially helpful if you have toddlers and young children who are prone to play running games around the living room,” she says.
Whatever the height of the ceiling, make sure the blades of the fan are large enough to circulate the air even when they are turned on at a low intensity.

Size of the room matters
If the living room is large, it will not make sense to buy one small ceiling fan because it cannot circulate air to all corners of the room effectively. “Instead, buy a fan with a large blade span,” Ssegujja advises, continuing, “However, if the sitting area is really large, you might have to install more than one ceiling fan to ensure the comfort of your guests.”
If you are worried about moving up and down to turn the fans on and off, just have the installers connect them with a remote control system.

Complement the original style
It often happens that by the time you notice the drabness of your ceiling, you have already settled down into a décor style for your living room. Remodelling your living room does not mean you have to change its style, though. Ssegujja advises, “Not all ceiling fans are plain white. There are new sleek styles these days that can match the décor of the room. To add a classic touch to your living room, you might want to try out stainless steel colours or brushed chrome. These colours usually blend with whatever colour of sofa sets or wall paint you have.”

For a better effect, paint your walls with neutral colours that do not clash with the colour of your ceiling fan. Alternatively, go for black or white fans because they do not appear to add bulk to a cluttered living room.

Install lighted fans
You might be wondering about the position of the overhead light if you install a ceiling fan. In fact, if you install both a fan and hanging bulb it will destroy the symmetry of the room.
“For a look that is out of the ordinary, try out side lights hanging from the wall,” Ssegujja says, adding, “However, if you must have an overhead light, then go for lighted ceiling fans. Some fans have a large bulb in the middle so that when the blades rotate, the bulb remains in one position. Other fans have small bulbs lines on the tops of their blades, such that when they are rotating, light is being thrown around the room.”
For subtlety, choose a fan with streamlined lights that do not rattle in their sockets when the blades of the fan are turning.

Mind the decibels

The old models of ceiling fans are noisy and clumsy as they turn around.
Some of them seem to be too heavy that they do not really make a difference in a hot room. Noisy and clumsy fans are a real conversation killer, especially in a small room.
As you shop for that fan that will transform the look of your living room, look out for the decibel rating on the fan.
