How does one deal with bullying at work?

There is a lot of bullying in work places today. Do companies have policies against bullying? What does one do if their employer doesn’t protect them against workplace bullies? Betty

Dear Betty,
A good organisation will have a policy that takes a stand on aspects of bullying. This would normally be defined within the Harassment Policy. Bullying can be demonstrated in a number of ways, shouting, physical contact, humiliation, persistent criticism and public ridicule. Addressing bullies is managed through the grievance procedure, so it is important that before you raise this issue, you have the evidence that supports your perspective. Information that you can collect may include records of incidents where you have been subject to instances, including date time and place. In order to make sure that your case is heard and that your issue is addressed you must make sure that you have read your grievance and disciplinary code. If your code has specific examples of harassment, verify that what you are experiencing is documented, this will help your case.
If after reporting cases of bullying you feel that your employer is not addressing your case, you can take it for resolution outside of the organisation through a legal channel. If you choose to do this, you must be aware of certain aspects, costs, and your ability to continue working within a safe environment.
It is important that cases get reported and resolved. Bullying can cause stress at a physical, emotional and mental level. It will have a negative impact on your health and will cause you to be disengaged at work and or even cause you to resign from your job even if you are not ready.
