Why don’t I ever get selected for trainings?

I love learning but I never get selected for training opportunities in my department. What do companies consider when choosing people to go for training opportunities? Jim

Dear Jim,
Organisations invest in training their people based on varied reasons. The major one being, addressing the skills gaps identified in particular people to enable them deliver their best. Another reason is to expose people to particular technologies, which the organisation is considering to invest in or has already invested in or to sponsor them to be mentored in leadership skills to prepare them for leadership positions in the future.
In the current digitally disrupted business environment, organisations are constantly investing in technologies, which will ensure they are relevant to their customers and hence the need to train their people in particular skills.

When you are passed over for training opportunities, it is best to try to understand why.
You should appreciate that you are in charge of your career and what your employer only does is facilitate your career growth.

Once you have identified where you want to be in the next three to five years and what you think are the skills gaps you need to take you there, then it will be easy to persuade your employer what kind of trainings you need. You should then have a session with your immediate boss, especially during the performance appraisal sessions and layout where you think your organisation should invest in training you to perform better in line with your career.
You should also know that being in charge of your career means investing in your career growth instead of waiting for your employer.
