Beyond getting experience, Musisi also emphasises that volunteer jobs provide a good avenue through which fresh graduates can network and make connections that could be vital in the job-searching process.

Majority of job seekers hardly think of anything else apart from getting a job that pays handsomely. However, volunteering could be that stepping stone that will deliver you to another level.
According to Connie Musisi, the head of careers at Uganda Christian University Mukono, job seekers should always look at volunteer jobs because they are an important aspect that not only can give them exposure but experience.

“In our country where most companies require a relevant experience, volunteer jobs must be every jobseekers option. They will give you that opportunity,” she says.
Lucy Asiimwe, a human resources manager at ministry of Public Service, says there are plenty of good reasons for job seekers to take on volunteer jobs and considering them as serious opportunities.

“For some who have tried them, they have perhaps benefited with even better jobs. In the long run they get what they want,” she notes, adding that most of the people that volunteer exhibit good skills that make employable people.
Volunteer jobs, Ms Musisi says, help you to attain skill as well as understand the work environment, which most employers look out for among fresh graduates.

“Institutions of learning teach the basics of work. You can only understand a work environment when you start working. No employer wants to employ someone who will be second guessing on what they are supposed to do,” she says.
Beyond getting experience, Musisi also emphasises that volunteer jobs provide a good avenue through which fresh graduates can network and make connections that could be vital in the job-searching process.

“While you are volunteering, you might meet someone who knows of a job opening somewhere and that person plays a key role to link you with someone who will assist you to secure a well-paying job,” she says.
Volunteer jobs can also be an important aspect that prepares you to be a resilient worker as well as helping you in terms of gaining judgment.
“Minus having some experience, it is difficult to get a job. No institution teaches institution. Therefore cease any opportunity that comes your way. It might not be paying but take it as you look for a better one,” Ms Musisi says.
