We all know Google, right. We also know that “jesusphone” as it was called by early adopters. I’m talking the Apple iPhone. Ever since this phone’s release there has been virtually no credible alternative to its sleekness and extreme ease of use. Enter Google, a company that revolutionised Internet search and web email. It is in 2010 poised to be a worthy contender at the iPhone party with the hugely anticipated Google Nexus One phone. Yes, geeky as the name might sound, it includes the standard modern additions of a light sensor, proximity sensor, and accelerometer (the thing that automatically changes the screen orientation when you rotate the phone).

The Nexus One has a 5 mega pixel camera with LED flash, runs Google’s Mobile Operating System called Android atop a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 3.7-inch display. Still not convinced by the hardware numbers, well apparently the phone is incredibly thin and sleek, actually a little thinner and lighter than the iPhone.

Many average consumers in Uganda wouldn’t even think twice about what operating system is running on a given phone as long as it looks good aesthetically and does everything else pretty well. But as we can see around us, there’s this shift towards smart phones. And the deal breaker for many smart phones is always the operating system running on the phone.

Google’s fronting its Android operating system with a host of Google services we’ve all come to love including Gmail, Google Maps, etc. Other Phone Operating systems include Windows Mobile, BlackBerry OS, iPhone OSX and Nokia’s Symbian.
