Most memorable Easter traditions

Easter has a number of traditions which range from religious to family traditions. Some people it as a day to strengthen their family ties. These traditions are annual and in most cases, they extend to generations. Some Ugandan families reveal their most memorable Easter experiences and how they have managed to carry them on annually.

We cut cake
Most people use Easter to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection as well as strengthening their family ties. According to Lucy Asiimwe, one of the most memorable Easter family traditions is cutting cake.

“Though most people cut cake on birthdays and weddings, we cut cake every Easter Sunday,” she says.
This, she notes, excites their family especially the children who are always looking forward to having cake each time they hear of Easter.

Asiimwe says this practice is one of the most memorable because it is a time they share good moments as a family. She adds that after cutting cake they always tell the young children about the significance of the act.”

We travel upcountry

According to Bridget Baguma, they always make it a point to travel and celebrate Easter as a family. Baguma says most of them do not stay in one place but they always endeavour to travel up country to spend the day with family.

“It is one of the most exciting things that I know Easter for, every time it approaches, we who stay far away from home get together,” she says.

Baguma says during that time when they are home they take memorable photos as family, and this is unique because it happens once in a while.

“We always don’t miss out on going home for Easter because it has become our family tradition,” she notes.

We go for an outing
According to the family of Ruguya, Easter is a day of getting together and getting to know each other better. He says during Easter season, they select a nice place where they can spend their evening as a family.
“My children always propose a nice place where we go and spend our Easter, it is quite memorable because that is among the few times where we merge as family and share a good time,” he says.
Ruguya adds that they always go with the children such that in future they can carry on the tradition.

The way of the cross
The Way of the Cross is widely known as a church tradition that is carried out on Easter by the Christian community. The Masoro family says their family always take part in the way of the cross.

She says the tradition was passed on by their parents and they have endeavoured to sustain it.

“Our parents were staunch Christians and they taught us to always take part in the way of the cross, they told us that is the only way you can picture the experience that Jesus Christ went through,” she explains.

Rebecca Masoro, a nurse, says though they started being part of this while they were still young, they have grown to love the whole experience and they are teaching their children to always embrace it.

“On Good Friday, we always converge as family and we join the rest of the church in the way of the cross, this has helped us to grow in faith and it is undoubtedly the most memorable Easter experience,” she notes.
