What you need to know:

  • Celebrate. November is an important month for the followers of the Baha’i. It is the month in which they celebrate the Twin Manifestations.

On November 1 and 2 this year, followers of the Baha’i all over the world, celebrated the birthdays of the Twin Manifestations, The Bab and Baha’u’llah.
The Bab (meaning the gate in Arabic) was born in 1819 in Shiraz in Iran. His mission that lasted only nine years was to prepare people for the advent of the Promised One, the One that every religion in the world was waiting for His appearance, Baha’u’llah, the glory of God.
During their childhood, both the Bab and Baha’u’llah were very different from other children of the same age.
They possessed extraordinary characters and were not preoccupied with worldly affairs, their attention was geared towards celestial matters, and were often found in quite corners praying and meditating.
After declaring his mission, at 25 years, The Bab started travelling to spread his message and prepare people for the coming of The Promised One.
As the number of his followers increasing rapidly, the clergy, fearing the loss of their religious positions urged the government to prosecute him.
After several arrests and imprisonments, the Bab was finally sentenced to death and was executed before thousands of people.
The events that unfolded the day of his martyrdom were miraculous, and were recorded by historians such as the British Orientalist Edward Browne.
On that day, the Bab was still reciting His last words to his scribe when they came to take Him for execution, He told them they won’t be able to kill him if He had not finish his words.
He was taken to firing squad and 750 bullets were fired on him, when the smoke of the guns settled, the Bab was nowhere to be seen, after a frantic search they found him in the same room where he had been with his scribe and told them I have now finished you can kill me.
Thousands of His followers faced prosecution and death in the most gruesome manner.
Shortly after that, Baha’ullah, declared his mission too and sent another shock wave through this very conservative Moslem nation.
His father was a very well-known minister in government, hence it became very difficult to inflict harm upon him, still, after a short harsh imprisonment, he was banished from Iran to Iraq, then Turkey.
All these efforts yielded no results in extinguishing the message of this new born religion that came to bring Humanity together under the flag of love and unity between all people of the world.
With the increase in the number of His followers, Baha’u’llah was finally sent to a remote prison in Akka where after many years, His earthly life ended when he passed away in 1892.
Today, His shrine has become a point of adoration for all the Baha’is in the world, Akka has itself become a heavenly garden.
Baha’is are now in all the countries of the world, embracing all the world’s nationalities, spreading the message of Unity, equality between men and women, universal education, among many other teachings, and a promise of peace on earth that Baha’is believe is inevitably coming.

The celebrations

Prior to 2015 and a decision by the Universal House of Justice, the governing body of the Bahá’ís, the two days had been observed on the first and second days of Muharram in the Islamic lunar calendar in the Middle East, while other countries observed them according to the Gregorian calendar, on October 20.
