Colours that will rule this year

Deep ocean is a luxurious shade of dark teal.

What you need to know:

COLOURFUL WORLD. Slowly, colour has evolved to mark an important part of menswear, and designers have stressed this importance in the market by creating a range of dominant palettes. Whether they are shades for office, contemporary sport, models of men’s uniforms, or set for the cityscapes or island getaways, colour have a way they reflect a man’s sense of style, writes Douglas D. Sebamala.

2016 has its own stream of colours that shall demonstrate clothing combinations and individual male styles or retail. Most of these however, seem to be emerging hues, that unfortunately might not make it to the Ugandan market as early.
While neutral colours such as white and grey are a perennial part of menswear, there is a new mix keeping in touch with nature. Some of the 2016 colours, albeit owing to the Climate Change Movement have an adventurous front with mushroom-like, infused soil and plant colour extracts.

Faint grey
This shade is a cast between the sky’s grey clouds, neither white but with streaks of subtle misty purple. It is dominant neutral for outerwear and would look good in shirts and trousers or even for your jackets and suits. You can always match it with black and shades of white and off-white.

Yellow
Strongly acidic shades of yellow inject an energetic dose of brightness to your wardrobe. Often paired with black or other primary shades, it looks best on material with particular luster like raincoats, or jackets, nylon and silk perhaps. Like sun-faded photographs, this soft nostalgia continues the conversation of pastels in menswear like some kind of beige.

Chamois
This is a probable alternative to faded yellow and light khaki. In whatever outfit you have it, chamois is outstanding on black skin. It has a likeness to desert sands, and thus matches beautifully in additional clothing like coats, jackets, trenches. It is a new neutral colour for the year. It is good for the working man, it won’t show dirt so easily.

Mauve mist
It presents an option that is rooted in pastel yet can also function as an updated neutral colour. So, taken from art pieces and ceramics, this shade looks beautifully caste into jackets of suits, and cardigans, trousers and shorts. It can easily be matched with other neutral colours too.

Vintage indigo
After several seasons of inky blue (in your denim and cotton) shades of indigo have appeared in desaturated form as vintage indigo. It is drenched with a rich, warm and juicy layer that looks good for men who like simple dark shades. It is an exotic difference from the dominant black and navy blue.

Chlorophyll green
Is a kind reminder of aqua life, it has that greenish layer often seen in water. This green is part vegetable palette that offers a technical newness to the many active looks of the season. It is best won in hard body clothing, not very different from Deep Ocean.

Sienna brown
A red-cast shade of earth brown, this colour looks closely related to chocolate brown. It works well with shoes and is common in leather jackets. However, latest designs are dropping it in pants and shirts, even vests and ties. It fits the category of sunset gold and purple which are drenched with rich, warm, juicy layers too.

Butter scotch
It is a very familiar shade of brown like the sugary (sukali guru), that can flare in the tropics. It has a golden brownish look of the sunset but butterscotch is the perfect evolution of orange and khaki. Khaki has been so much a trend of 2015, that here is a new way of wearing it without exactly chipping it out entirely. It has less saturated shades, offering a masculine yet refined option.

Orange rind
It is torn between red and yellow, giving a margin neither too bright, not at all dull, nor dark. Orange remains part of those sunny colours, because it looks good on both active-inspired sportswear and contemporary tailoring or woven sweaters and bags.

Deep ocean
Is a luxurious shade of dark teal. It looks amazing in suits and scarves when paired nicely with lighter shades for shirts and is organic for its likeness to aqua life. Simply think of the ocean and its very dark blue green waters.
