What you need to know:

  • SIGHTS. Having only stopped at the primary school geography lessons, OPIO SAM CALEB got the opportunity to go to Kyangabi in Rubirizi District.

The parliamentary Speakers staff retreat special offer was one opportunity for me to step out , and savour more travel/ geography experience.
Imagine the curiosity a Kanyum boy who only heard of Rift Valley, contours and craters in his primary class lessons. And the most known places he has known are Nyero Rock Paintings, Kumi Hotel. Having had chances to Finland’s Rotating Tower, ice skating, Scandic Hotel and recently South Koreas Saemaul Udong, crossing the Equator and being at the centre of the world was once on my to-do list.
A five- hour drive from Kampala- Mbarara-Kasese Road with a stopover at the Equator for a short call and photos unleashed us through the Western Rift valley tea plantations and winding roads to Rubirizi District . Finally we turn off the main road from a Welcome to Kyangabi Crater Resort signpost past a dead crater with a banana plantation to a lush tropical landscape stylish retreat centre .

Arrival
A tall reserved lady in a T-shirt and blue jeans, wearing a trademark smile and hospitality of a grandmother welcomes us the guests with a welcome glass of fresh fruit juice as if she had known our long journey exhaustion and thirst. The fruit are from her orchard surrounding the sort that preserves nature.
“You are welcome to Kyangabi Crater Resort and we promise to take care of your needs and make you enjoy your vacation. We have no rules, no restrictions nor age limit. Bring all your family members, friends, and relatives and we shall accommodate and give them a treat of a lifetime,” the woman says with a tone of a suitor.
Mr Kamaali a familiar and regular guest here who was our de facto team leader whispered “that is Rose, a seasoned senior civil servants mentor from Teso and the owner of this great place.”

Ambience
Kyangabi Crater Resort has integrated art, architecture and nature into one unique space to create a never seen before landmark. It is designed to create village inspired, ancient yet modern and contemporary look. An eco-friendly resort provides both luxury, comfort and every guest is a prize winner.

As we relaxed and prepared for the tour to the crater lakes, an elephant majestically strolled the savannah building up my curiosity for the Queen Elizabeth National Park tour the next morning.
Interacting with nature magnificent views of crater lakes at Bunyaruguru , game drive at Kasenyi, forest walks, primates tracking combine the thrill of a safari with relaxation.
