What you need to know:

  • MY STYLE. Shafik Kayima is one of the presenters of Twezimbe, a 6am to 9am programme on Dembe FM and Spark TV. It runs on Monday to Friday.
  • Isaac Ssejjombwe caught up with him for his fashion tips and tricks.

What fashion style describes you?
I’m casual smart from Monday to Wednesday and casual for the rest of the days.

What do you describe as casual smart?
A long sleeved shirt with a pair of jeans and maybe khaki pants with dress shoes while casual is a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers.

When did you choose to dress like this?
I did not just decide but I felt it is the style that suits me.

Was this all about you as a media personality?
No, it is about my choice of clothes. I have been told by different people that TV needs someone to be extra casual but I have always been like this. I’m free style.

You seem to love fitting clothes. Why this choice?
Surprisingly, my clothes are big and because of my body structure, they look tight.

Do you take your clothes for altering?
No, I buy what pleases me and surprisingly it fits perfectly.

Does your working out contribute to the choice of clothes you wear?
No, but when I continuously worked out, I realised that the clothes fit perfectly thus I stuck to those pieces.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?
I own between 15 and 17 pairs.
How much is your most expensive pair?
Unfortunately or fortunately, I never bought the most expensive shoes I own. They were given to me as a gift by John Baker, a friend in the UK. It is a high boot and when I started wearing it, people started praising me and talking about it. I looked it up on Google and to my surprise it costs Shs1.5m.

And what about those you bought yourself?
A pair of sneakers I bought two months ago at about shs280,000.

Could these be the most expensive item in your wardrobe?
Yes they are but I also have a watch I bought at Shs900,000.

And what is the cheapest item in your wardrobe?
I have camouflage shorts that I bought Shs15,000 and I like them so much because they are flexible.

Do you own a suit in your life?
Yes, I have four suits

What is it with tinting your beard?
It is my trademark that people identify me with. I came up with it in 2014.

What trend do you consider outrageous?
The coloured tight long sleeved outfits that look like overalls that men wear on top of shirts and shorts. They are always worn by celebrities. They look awkward.

How often do you go shopping?
I shop when I have some money on me, and when I see some nice items.

What designer perfume do you use?
I use Brown Orchid.

When did you start using it?
One of my girlfriends introduced me to it. She bought it from Dubai. I have since never looked back.

How much is it ?
When the gift got used up I could not find it. One day on WhatsApp, a friend called Optional Allan posted a number of perfumes and it was among them. He told me about the seller who got in touch saying it costs Shs80,000. I knew that was a counterfeit but he promised to look for the original after two weeks. He has since never got back to me. I made an online purchase.

How much does it cost?
It is Shs250,000.

What perfume were you using before ?
I did not have any particular one. I was juggling between 212 and Dolby.

How often do you visit the barbershop?
Twice a week.

Where?
Amara Beauty Salon in Nakulabye.

How much do you spend there?
My barber charges Shs10,000.

What are your eating habits?
I like eating healthy foods that build my muscles such as meat (goat and beef) and chicken. And when it comes to chicken, I eat a whole one. I eat posho, potatoes, yams and eggs. I try as much as possible to eat more than an average person.

How many meals do you eat?
I eat more than six meals a day. It is so hard to maintain the body without eating.

How heavy are you?
I’m 105kg.

Quick take
Do you go to the gym?
Yes, I go six times and rest on Sunday.
Where?
I don’t have a specific one. Sometimes I go to City Gym on Kampala Boulevard, Dopes Gym, My Body Tempo Gym, among others.
Why do you go to the gym?
I started way back in school and it has become part of me. I go because I love the routine. I cannot spend three days without going there. Besides, I want to keep healthy.

How much do you spend there?
I pay daily depending on the gym I go to. I pay between Shs10,000 and Shs50,000.

What do you do specifically when you visit?
I do body building. Workouts for muscles.
