This is an excellent opportunity to meet bakers and fully understand the range of their abilities.

Select a style
After deciding about dress style and reception decor have been made, think about the design and structure of your wedding cake. Choose a cake that’s compatible with the style of the venue, the season, your gown, the flower arrangements, or the menu. If you want colourful accents (such as sugar flowers or icing ribbons), give your baker fabric swatches. The cake should be part of the wedding, not a glaring sideshow.

When you get into pricing one is looking at quantity and flavours. In other words, the lower the price the less fancy the flavour and that would include vanilla or lemon with the high end being chocolate and fruit cakes.
While quantity means weight and the number of cakes one chooses and how many cakes ‘tiers’ or ‘platforms’ one desires.
Cakes can be preserved with cognac and brandy and will keep for up to two years though not all cakes are best kept that long.

Serving
A practical way of serving the cake is to have it form part of the dessert and do not hesitate to have try out samples from different service providers. This is very important since you don’t want to end up with something disappointing and sub- standard.
Finally, always take references and be sure to call them and find out what they have to say about your referrals.
Do not be charmed by reputation; people can be overrated not to mention those who are passed their prime and are not up to snuff.
