Spit roasting, a forgotten ideal

In many homes, there were nets reserved for roasting meat and chicken. But now that is a forgotten story.

What you need to know:

FORGOTTEN STORY. In many homes, there were nets reserved for roasting meat and chicken. But now that is a forgotten story.

Spit roasting, also known as rotisserie grilling, has slowly fallen out favour in today’s world of cookery.
During our days as children in the US everyone in the neighbourhood had a rotisserie attachment.
But perhaps in this McDonald and KFC era, we are too hurried for the time it takes to roast chicken or a leg of pork.
Not many people know a thing or two about spit roasting combined with the charring properties of direct grilling.
The rotating motion bastes the meat with the melting fat and these virtues are not lost on the French, the Arabs or the Brazilians who have made it the focal point of their grilling.

The specialty at Meza Shawarma is the long-standing Levantine tradition and method of meat preparation where lamb, poultry, beef, veal or a mixture of meat are placed on a spit and may be grilled for as long as a day.

Now open for several months and located opposite Acacia Mall, Meza Shawarma offers what many consider authentic and well prepared shawarma that is reasonably affordable and in a smart and informal setting.

It could be bad that they are not in a location such as Kololo or Ntinda where families would enjoy their food in greater comfort and luxury.

But even then, they, the current location not withstanding, are saved by the great side walk shelter that can sit several diners in a seemingly less busy street.

For starters, I would recommend the cocktail mezza for a hungry soul, which comprises of humus, mutabbai, tabbouleh served with two pieces of falafel, four pieces of vine leaves and two pieces of pita bread.
This can be a shared meal and would set you back by Shs13,000.
If you wish to settle for a simple snack and your budget is slim then a beef kofta or a chicken shawarma would be the ideal choice.

Of course, I would be careless not to mention the bountiful vegetarian choices such as the tabbouleh or fatoush salad or the vegetarian plate, which is awfully generous and filling.
Meza Shawarma does very good food that is as authentic as one would wish and well-priced. The staff are cheery, smart and knowledgeable.
