The baking heat of Kuwait

What you need to know:

  • THE FURNACE ON EARTH. We ignore the alarm bells of global warming but Kuwait is one place to feel the damning heat.

I was recently visiting the land where I was born, Kuwait. Not exactly the best time of the year, as the Kuwaiti summer temperatures tend to bake you. There is no exaggeration in the above statement, hence driving a car that has been parked in the sweltering sun equals steering in a furnace. After managing to burn my hand touching an external metal part of the car, I decided I should, as my mother kept asking me to, wear cotton gloves to be able to touch the steering wheel.

Early years
My family arrived to Kuwait in 1956, before any of us were born, and even before the discovery of oil, hence Kuwait was a poor country depending on fishing as its main source of income. Today it’s considered to be one of the richest in the world, and with the super subsidised electricity and water tariffs, air conditioning is blowing cool air in houses, cars, offices and malls, making the heat a bit more tolerable.
However, my Mother told me that in the early years of their arrival, in some parts of Kuwait there was no electricity and their first house was in such an area, not even a fan!! Still, they could put up with the summer heat , so what happened since then? Why can’t we put up with this heat anymore ? Indeed, all the worrying warnings about global warming are coming true, the alarm bells are turning into ‘fire in the house’ sirens, sadly this fire can’t be extinguished with water hoses of the fire brigade!
Reading a recent report by BBC, my own alarm bells sounded even higher. After the world finally realised that we are heading to a looming disaster, and that the next generation might not have clean air to breath, Paris climate deal was born. This meant that every country in the world should submit an accurate Data on the greenhouse gas emissions in their countries to the United Nations. In the above report It became clear that many countries submitted inaccurate Data and it seems the future is even more uncertain when it comes to protecting the environment.

And the viral video
A video has been making rounds in the social media, a young man who claims that negative media is brainwashing us with negative news about an unsafe world heading for disaster, and he shared some data to prove his point that this is the safest time during human history!
I partially agree with him, about the focus on negative news, and disagree that we are living in safe times, it seems this young man has followed his own advice to the audience not to watch these news, and meanwhile he is missing out on all the developments, maybe he wants to prove
