Why some men go to the gym

What you need to know:

  • Fitness matters. Some men told Racheal Irene Nalubega why they go for work out.
  • Edward Byamukama,35, a businessman whom I found at GG’Z gym working out ,says he badly wants to lose the weight he has gained over the past three years.
  • This kind of muscle-building is unlike the professional muscle building usually done to win competitions, but the kind to to tone one’s body, so it can stand out when donning a fitting shirt.

Men are said to be naturally muscular and more energetic. The reason why when it comes to lifting heavy things or taking on tasks that require physical strength, it is they that are called on.
But this body strength comes with exercising which many men have realised and have made the gym their go-to hangout though not all those that consider exercising only do it for the strength.

To be active
Jimmy Ssendigye, a fitness instructor at GG’Z Health Spa, says it is not all about looking muscular but also for the liveliness and strength that comes with exercising.
“When I exercise my mind is refreshed and if I am stressed, I get relief. The speed at which I do things also increases unlike most men who are sluggish when they do not exercise,” Ssendigye says.

For the packs
That is not the main reason why Herbert Kabuye, a land surveyor, exercises. He says most women he has dated tend to be attracted to men with six packs, so he feels that it is probably one of the reasons he was never physically appealing to them.
“On learning this, I embarked on getting myself the famous six pack but since I started a few weeks back, the pain I have been feeling is making me rethink my decision. In the meantime, I’m weighing on whether to please others or myself.”

His colleague and friend in the same boat, Musa Mutyaba, was also compelled into keeping fit upon realising how much men with packs attract girls’ attention.
He says his girlfriend goes hysterical whenever she watches shirtless soap opera characters to which he agrees on how good their bodies look. So, he embarked on the search for the packs as well.

To build muscles
This kind of muscle-building is unlike the professional muscle building usually done to win competitions, but the kind to to tone one’s body, so it can stand out when donning a fitting shirt.
Eric Opio, a fitness instructor at Aussie Barbell gym, who has protruding arm muscles, says he chose to build muscle as a way of keeping fit and looking fierce.
“Many people fear me when they see my body especially “potential” thieves which I’m proud of. I exude strength and nobody can dare me.”
He recommends muscle building for every man but they should not outdo themselves.

To lose weight
Edward Byamukama,35, a businessman whom I found at GG’Z gym working out ,says he badly wants to lose the weight he has gained over the past three years.
“My weight has been attributed to the junk food I eat and my body feels heavy and tired. My body is not as lean as it used to be in my teenage but I am now missing it before I clock 40 years.”
With such a body he would easily carry himself around.

A hunting ground?
Not that everyone exercising is doing it for a reasonable excuse. There is a category of men known to go to the gym in disguise of exercising but with ulterior motives. For some, it is about finding soulmates.
“It began when I was doing sit-ups to trim my tummy,” says Lilian Kayinza, a social worker. Then in-between, a guy who was a member kept morale boosting me. Thereafter, he asked for my phone contact. He keeps asking me out for coffee dates but I’m hesitant and not ready for him anyway.”

There is a Facebook group I belong to where a lady was asking members how she could find a rich potential partner and surprisingly, most women recommended her to consider going to the gym as that’s where most people hook up.
With the workout craze in town, everyone has a reason to step out of home.
