City Tyres-Formula One winners back Hamilton

What you need to know:

Formula One. Four individuals Sowedi Eriasa Kategano, Isaac Lubega, Wilson Awuzu and Leo Beyagira are so far the known winners - they will total eight - of a once-in-a-lifetime all-expenses paid trip to one of the world’s greatest F1 circuits at the Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi.

KAMPALA.

Formula One racing might not be as popular in Africa and Uganda in particular as it is in other continents.

The one person who seems to be easily identified with the sport in the country at least going by the first four ticket winners to the City Tyres -Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 27, is Lewis Hamilton.

While all four professed not to be keen Formula One followers, Hamilton who is the first and only black driver ever to not only take part but also win a Formula One title stood out.

With a narrow two-point lead going into this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, he will not be short of support when he takes to the cockpit.

“I am a Lewis Hamilton fan but I do not watch a lot of Formula One especially because of work. Also because of different time zones some races do not happen at convenient hours,” Wilson Awuzu, the third ticket winner, explained to SCORE.

For Isaac Lubega, the second winner of the draw, he cannot wait to be part of that exciting action. “I am really looking forward to the prospect of watching live a Formula One race. I have been told many stories and I’m excited at the prospect of just sitting there and enjoying VIP treatment,” stated Lubega.

“I have not really been following the sport but when I get an opportunity Hamilton is my favourite,” he added.

For Sowedi Eliasa Kategano and Leo Beyagira ,the other winners, the prospect of traveling to Abu Dhabi will represent a whole new experience after the pair admitted to knowing little about the sport. Four other winners are expected to be announced until October when the promotion ends.

The promotion aimed at rewarding the City Tyres customers requires one to buy four Pirelli tyres, before the end of October from any City Tyres outlet, to stand a chance of making the all-expense paid trip.

Triple-world champion Lewis Hamilton has seen his 19-point lead in this year’s Formula One race reduced to two points over the last two races by teammate Nico Rosberg.

The latter won both in Italy and Belgium with Hamilton finishing second and third respectively. With six races left and the pair going neck to neck Lubega and Awuzu will hope Hamilton, like was the case in 2014, clinches the title right in front of their eyes at the Yas Marina circuit.
