What you need to know:

  • Soccer. The KCCA striker has played his way into the prying eyes of representatives from several African clubs with the highest profile side being African champions Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, who are hosting the Chan event.

Striker Derrick Nsibambi is attracting the glances of scouts at the on-going 2018 Championship of African Nations (Chan) in Morocco.
Nsibambi, who struck a magnificent volley, against Zambia is being monitored by continental giants Wydad Casablanca in Marrakech.

Wydad, who are riding high after winning the 2017 Caf Champions League, are Morocco’s biggest and most successful club, with a rich history through their 80 years of existence.
“They (Wydad) are keeping tabs on him but are not the only ones,” revealed a source. “There is nothing concrete but the player (Nsibambi) is in their minds. Let us wait and see what happens.”

Goal poacher
Nsibambi, the lead striker for the Azam Uganda Premier League and Uganda Cup champions KCCA, was wanted by a host of Egyptian sides when Uganda Cranes played the Pharaohs home and away in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers last year.

But a potential deal fell through after KCCA refused to release him.
New Uganda Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre has previously coached Wydad and it remains to be seen whether his ties with the Moroccan club will be central to the deal should the speculation intensify.

With Geoffrey Massa retired and Geoffrey Sserunkuma in the twilight of his career, Nsibambi and Mohammed Shaban are viewed by observers as the front runners to the coveted No.9 role for the country.
Both will be keen to impress Desabre ahead of the resumption of the 2019 Afcon qualifiers that will be played in the second half of the year.

Breaking new fronts
Nsibambi, who was superb for KCCA in continental football and struck a glorious header against Tunisian side Club Africain at the StarTimes stadium at Lugogo in the Confederation Cup, would be the first Ugandan to play in the Moroccan league, known as Botola, if an agreement was reached.

And he would become the latest Ugandan footballer to play in North Africa after Hassan Wasswa Mawanda’s transfer to Egyptian side El-Geish last year.

ABOUT DERRICK NSIBAMBI

Change of fortune. Nsibambi lived in Geoffrey Sserunkuma’s shadow for the most of the 2016/17 season, but he did just enough to lead KCCA to titles and make it among Uganda’s best 50 athletes of the previous year. The forward scored eight goals for KCCA in the title winning season and led the charts with as many goals as his club won the 2017 Uganda Cup. Nsibambi was also dangerous on continent, finding the back of the net four times as KCCA made the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup. The striker made his senior national team debut in Uganda’s 1-0 win over Cape Verde in the 2019 Afcon qualifiers. He has since twice faced Egypt, Ghana, Congo, and leads charts Cecafa with three goals heading into semis. Nsibambi also helped Uganda qualify for Chan 2018
