However, they must now complement their recent two wins over Simba and Rockets with a positive result against favourites and third placed Weatherhead
Wananchi’s Derrick Akuwa warned when he returned a fortnight ago, from his four month ban, that no team should pop their champagne just yet.
Akuwa’s belief is that Wananchi, who are top of the log with 31 points, can obtain maximum points from this final round to win this league in which they have largely played second fiddle to Kampala Hockey Club and Weatherhead.
However, they must now complement their recent two wins over Simba and Rockets with a positive result against favourites and third placed Weatherhead.
Unfortunately for Wananchi, they will not go into this one as favourites. Weatherhead have the better head to head record this year that started with a 4-3 win when the sides met in Nairobi during the Africa Cup of Club Championships in January.
Weatherhead, who sit third with 29 points having played one game less, have gone on to win twice in three league meetings and can virtually obtain the title if they win today.
Suffice to note their last two games are against Rockets and Simba who have not managed to get a single point off the top three teams so far. Given the organizational struggles of the sides and the fact that Rockets and Simba have conceded 25 and 26 goals against Weatherhead in the league respectively, it will take a miracle of spectacular proportions for them to cause an upset.
But Wananchi are a side that has beaten their opponents when it has mattered most this year – just like they did in the Independence Cup final shootout against Weatherhead or during the Easter Cup final against KHC.
