Not many coaches like playing the third place playoff game in any tournament. One soccer pundit Michael Cox described it as one of the most useless matches.
Uganda Christian University (UCU) men’s coach Nason Bwesigye equally believes the Aziz Damani Volleyball third place playoff with Kampala Amateurs Volleyball Club (KAVC) is “not all that important having missed the opportunity to win the ultimate prize.”
UCU men let Nemostars overturn a 1-0 deficit to win the semifinals 1-2 and Bwesigye has now let some of his players concentrate on their exams.
“Our advantage is that we have the numbers but we have to go well prepared. KAVC are better than us technically because of the experience,” Bwesigye said.
However, his colleague Protus Soita, who coaches the ladies’ team insists that if they must win the league in future, they must start with claiming bronze at the expense of Sport-S.
“I still need this match and I have talked to the girls to take this seriously. For six years we have finished fourth in the league and to change that, we have to start by winning bronze,” Soita said.
Soita is buoyed by the fact that he has beaten Sport-S in the last three encounters; national league, national club championships and UCU open.
“We need to build on those wins. We are confident because we played according to plan against VVC (in the semis) but luck did not go our way,” Soita added.
