Let students make their own choices
Posted Sunday, March 10 2013 at 02:00
It is believed that when one joins university, they are in the final stage of determining their career path.
The greatest hindrance to following one’s heart in deciding careers has always been influence from parents, sponsors, and carrier guidance specialists who advise, encourage or even force students to join particular universities and study particular subjects for reasons that may be based on religion, principles of morality and to some extent the financial stand of the sponsor.
Some parents stereotype universities for example, that students of a particular university are prostitutes, time-wasters, always striking and morally deranged as compared to other universities. They use this as a pretext to deny their children an opportunity to go to these universities.
Parents should let their children make their own choices because at the end of the day, they know what they can do and what they cannot do and where they want to do it from. We may allow people to advise us but we should never let them make decisions for us.
