The Madhvani Foundation has announced the names of recipients for scholarships in 2010-2011. The list which features students from all over the country, represents the largest amount of money ever donated by the foundation. “This year we have donated Shs536m, which is more than Shs20ms more than last year’s contribution. The Foundation has done this in order to account for inflation and the increased cost of University tuition fees which is a common reality among institutions of higher learning across the country,” the Foundation stated in a press statement. The number of students who received scholarships has reduced slightly from 175 in 2009 to 149 this year.

Eastern region got the most with 43, followed by Western with 41 students, while Central region got 38 scholarships and the North with received 27. Commenting on the demographic distribution of the scholarships, Foundation chairman, Mr Kyemba said: “This distribution pattern proves that the selection criteria is transparent and the foundation is playing a significant role in developing the whole of the country.”

He noted that Masaka District with 13 scholarships registered the single highest number of individual recipients followed by Mukono district with 8. He advised students who intend to apply for the 2011/2012 academic year Madhvani Foundation scholarships to study hard to ensure they maintain Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 2.2 after their first year of study.
