At least 248,513 candidates who passed last year’s Uganda Certificate of Education exams qualify to join higher institutions of learning.

According to results released by Uganda National Examinations Board yesterday, majority of the students passed in Division Four, the last pass grade at 45.7 per cent (119, 740) while only 7.2 per cent (18, 826) appeared in Division One - the best grade.

Mr Dan Odongo, the Uneb deputy secretary secondary department, yesterday explained that students between Divisions One to Four have passed the exams and can get a certificate.

Those who appear in Division Seven and Nine (13,363 students) have failed while Division X candidates (5, 903) registered with the national examiner but did not sit the exams.
This means that 19,266 candidates can repeat Senior Four if they want to continue with their studies.

Mr Matthew Bukenya, the Uneb executive secretary, reported a decline of candidates who registered last year compared to 2011. “The candidature decreased by 4,457 from 273, 363 in 2011. The reasons for this decline are yet to be investigated,” he said.

Parents should prepare to send their children to school on March 4 as Education Minister Jessica Alupo said Senior Five selection is due on February 14-15 at Wonderworld, Kasanga in Kampala.
