Determined. He excelled despite studying from a girls-only school

Kalungu.

Philip Lugolobi, 19, smiled with joy, as tears quickly welled up in his eyes as he struggled to explain how he was able to excel in the A-Level examinations.

Lugolobi is among the best candidates from St Theresa Girls’ SS Bwanda in the 2015 UACE exams released last Friday after scoring 19 points in BCM/IT.

Despite the fact that St Theresa is a girl’s school, teachers can be allowed to bring one of their sons or relative to study in the school regardless of the sex and Lugolobi was among the five boys there.

“I was a bit disappointed because I wanted an ‘A’ in Biology, still thanks go to my teachers and fellow students who supported me. Since St Theresa is a girls school, I appeared to be an odd man out but I was never discriminated,” he said shyly.

Moses Katabira, Lugolobi’s guardian and class teacher of Form Six, said he had feared to enrol Lugolobi in the school but was happy that he had not disappointed him.

“I knew right from the start that he would excel and I am happy that he has not disappointed me,” he said in an interview.
Lugolobi , a son of Damali Namirimu and Pement Mukasa of Nabweru in Wakiso District, went to Tendo Primary School in Nabweru where he scored Aggregate 8 in his PLE.

He says after scoring Aggregate 11 in his Senior Four examinations at MK Crown Academy, Mr Katabira took him to Kalungu to watch over him closely through his Advanced Level.
“I wanted to take sciences and he was a science teacher teaching Biology and Chemistry, having a chance to enroll one child, he thought of me,” he explained.

Lugolobi said his dream of becoming a medical doctor will be achieved since he can be admitted to university due to his excellent performance.
