Inter-school water competition showcases students’ skills

On July 29, nine secondary schools gathered at Viva College in Jinja for the inaugural inter-school water competition dubbed inter-school Aqualibrium.
Nabisunsa Girls Secondary School was the overall winner, Gayaza High School emerged first runners-up while Jinja College came second.
Other participating schools were Kiira College Butiki, St Mary’s College Kisubi, Kings College Budo, Horizon College School, Busoga College Mwiri, Trinity College Nabingo and host school, Viva College, Jinja. Viva College spokesperson Peter Fredrick Kirabo said the competition aimed at making students job creators rather than jobseekers in this highly competitive labour market.
He added that in this competition, students are taught creativity and innovation because they have to transfer water from one source to another with equal pressure and volume.
“They have to devise means of how using various dimensions in order to see how best the volume of water can move at the same pace and reach the various destinations,” he said. The students also competed in practical connectivity of water from a source using pipes spread across a table.

Audrey Namanya, a student of Gayaza High School, said the competition has helped her to be creative, adding that the Ugandan curriculum mainly teaches theory to read and pass exams.
Similarly, Nabeel Kaawaase, a Senior Five student of Kings College Budo, who was among the participants in the ‘Water Supply’ competition, said he learnt how to conserve nature, water, equal distribution of water from different sources and how water is distributed in different homes.
National Water and Sewerage Corporation Kampala area engineer, Aboth Yakoba, said such competitions shape the minds of the children since they are now well equipped on water supply network, levelling, treatment and preservation.
Nabisunsa Girls received a trophy and a Shs1 million cash prize, Gayaza High School walked away with Shs700,000 while Jinja College took home Shs500,000.
The overall winner in next year’s water supply competition will participate in the inter-competition finals to be held in Cape Town, South Africa.
