Job scarcity made me think outside the box

What you need to know:

  • I worked as a cashier for one year until I got an opportunity as a customer relations manager at Finix.

Scovia Kamwebaze is a journalist by profession whose only experience in media was during her internship. She is currently a customer relations manager with Finix International a job she got after working as a cashier for Simba Telecom.
“I graduated with Bachelors in Mass Communication from Uganda Christian University, Mukono in 2013. Since my internships were in line with my area of study, I was hoping I would start practicing as soon as I graduated.

And so after getting my transcript, I hit the streets in search of a job. I knocked on doors of different media houses in vain. I did this for a year and a few months and got fed up. I decided to sit at home but stayed in touch with my friends to tell me of any available opportunities. The longer I stayed home, the more I got convinced that I would take on any job that comes my way provided I would be earn from it.
In early 2015, I got a call from a friend who informed me of a job opportunity at Simba Telecom, however, she was quick to add that they needed a cashier.

Though the job required an accountant, I decided to give it a try, and surprisingly I got it. I did not know where to start from but somehow, I was determined to master everything. My supervisor trained me for two weeks and within a month, I was ably carrying out my work.
I worked as a cashier for one year until I got an opportunity as a customer relations manager at Finix. I encourage young people to have the willingness to take on any opportunity that is available as this will help bridge the unemployment gap that is currently a big problem in Uganda.”
