Nkumba University guild president arrested for embezzling Shs13m students' money

Mr. Henry Byansi

ENTEBBE:
Nkumba University Guild president, Mr. Henry Byansi, was on Wednesday arrested and detained at Entebbe police station over alleged misappropriation of Ush 13 million in students’ funds that was part of the money meant to cover the university’s Beauty pageant held at the weekend.

Byansi’s arrest came after a 5hour long meeting that started at 2pm between the Dean of students, Mr. David Kasasa, the Guild and pageants participants, who alleged that the prizes they received weren’t equivalent to the money that had invested in the pageant.

A student leader who requested anonymity told Daily Monitor that during the meeting, “The University report from Mr. Kasasa (Dean) shows that the University released Ushs 16million for the beauty pageant but Ms. Joanita Namujja, the guild finance officer claimed to have only received Ushs 3.5 million from Byansi” the student said.

Further stating that when Byansi was tasked to explain where the rest of the money was, he said that he had used it for other expenses that the guild finance officer wasn’t aware of.
His response sparked off outrage from the students who became rowdy prompting the Dean Mr. Kasasa to draft an agreement ordering Byansi to refund the money and also immediately resign from his position as guild president.

Byansi who was at first hesitant to append his signature on the agreement was forced to do so after students threatened to mob him. He was saved by the police.

Byansi a law student was elected Guild President in April this year, his exit making him the shortest serving guild president at the institution.
