Kampala

The Forum for Democratic Change president, Dr Kizza Besigye, has donated 100 bags of cement towards the reconstruction of Kisekka Market which was gutted by fire on Monday. Addressing vendors on Thursday, Dr Besigye said: “I want to convey my sympathies towards the big loss you experienced but accept the little I have contributed.”

Flanked by Kampala Central MP Erias Lukwago and Makindye East MP Hussein Kyanjo, Dr Besigye said leaders must implement people’s interests and their own wishes.

Fighting for rights
“In such incidents, we must not forget the fact that we need to fight for our rights and interests as the electorates. You are [electorates] the bosses in this country and elected leaders must implement what you want,” he said. At least 321 traders lost property worth Shs2 billion. A total of 111 stalls and 40 shops and kiosks were destroyed by the Monday inferno.

Mr Lukwago urged the government to release all reports about recent fires; including the Kasubi Tombs, Buddo Junior School fire that killed over 20 pupils and Nakivubuo Park Yard Market fire. “Several committees have been established to investigate such fire incidents but nothing is coming out. The public should be informed to avoid suspicions,” Mr Lukwago said.
