The father of Gilbert Bwana Arinaitwe, Dr Kizza Besigye’s tormentor in the Thursday fracas studied with the leader of the biggest opposition party in Uganda, Forum for Democratic Change, it has emerged.

Eng. Sarapio Biryaba told Sunday Monitor that Mr Geoffrey Bwana of Karorwa Parish in Bukinda sub-county, Kabale District was in the same Kigezi High School with Dr Besigye in 1975. The trio completed Senior Six together.

Eng. Biryaba said Arinaitwe was attacking a person he knew well. Bwana died sometime back, according to Bukinda residents, and the home is being taken care of by his uncles.

Family sources said the mother stays in Kawempe and works with one of the government ministries. Sunday Monitor has also learnt that Arinaitwe went to St Mary’s College Rushoroza in Kabale and “was a humble student who conducted himself as the most disciplined.”

His former headmaster Mr Amos Ruhumiriza, said yesterday that he was disturbed by what he saw in the media about Arinaitwe. “During his school days he was a humble student. Always humble and active in class, and I am wondering how he ended up into such humiliating acts,” the now retired Ruhumiriza said.

Kabale was yesterday awash with the news that their own son had done such a humiliating thing, saying such actions of the regime would return to haunt the whole region.

“The whole world was seeing and the people have been able to identify him. Such actions can bring serious repercussions to the whole family. Some of us who know him will never identify with him,” his old boy at Rushoroza, now working in Mbarara, told Sunday Monitor.

There were reports of an attack on his ancestral home in Karorwa parish, but this newspaper could not independently verify the development.
