President Museveni tells ongoing NRM Caucus that Security Minister Amama Mbabazi, whom he has just named the new Prime Minister, should quit as Secretary General of the ruling party.

A source at the ongoing NRM caucus at State House Entebbe says Dokolo County MP Felix Okot Ogong sought to know whether Mr Mbabazi would simultaneously hold the powerful SG portfolio.

President Museveni is reported to have categorically responded: “No.” This means Mr Mbabazi will have to resign from the party’s second most powerful position to which he was re-elected following a tough contest eight months ago.

The latest developments open up fresh race for the SG job which outgoing Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, Trade Minister, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire and Prof. Elijah Mushemeza lost to Mr Mbabazi.

The ruling party last year amended its constitution requiring among others that its secretary general should not hold another substantive government employment so that the office bearer concentrates on building the NRM party.
