Four evangelists, including two American nationals were killed after their car was rammed into by a trailer on Thursday night.

The accident that occurred on the Jinja-Iganga highway at Kakira round-about, claimed lives of Dr Reo Godvich and his brother Reo from First Assemblies’ Church located in Arizona State, USA, pastor John Mike Mugerwa of Saints-Gate in Katwe, in Makindye, Kampala and Ronnie Ssebunya. The Americans visited the country at the invitation of pastor Mugerwa.

The driver of the Toyota car, only identified as Paul, is undergoing treatment at Jinja Hospital. Police said the group were from attending a crusade for married couples in Namutumba District and heading to Kampala.

Mr Vincent Ssekatte, the deputy police spokesperson, attributed the accident to reckless driving. “Three trailers were all coming from one direction (from Jinja side) and when they reached a hump, a five occupant Toyota Super Custom was in the middle of two trailers then one from the back failed to break and rammed killing the four on spot.”

Mr Ssekatte said the bodies have been transferred to Mulago Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. “No arrests have been executed in connection to the cause of the accident as both drivers of the trailers are on the run.”

Jinja police spokesperson Samson Lubega said the Super Custom vehicle was caught in between two trailers after it failed to overtake the first one. A police report indicates that 22,461 accidents occurred in 2010 and were distributed as serious (9,866), fatal (2,620) and minor accidents were 9475.
