In Summary

The seat fell vacant after court nullified Mr Nabeta’s victory following a petition challenging his academic papers and voter bribery claims.

President Museveni and his rival FDC leader Kizza Besigye yesterday spent the day in Jinja campaigning for their candidates in the Jinja East by-election slated for tomorrow.

As Dr Besigye rallied support for Mr Paul Mwiru at Busoga Square, Mr Museveni addressed Nathan Igeme Nabeta’s supporters at Lakeside Primary School in Walukuba, Masese Division.

Mr Museveni accused opposition politicians of being responsible for unemployment in the country by blocking development projects such as the botched Mabira Forest give-away and the petition to World Bank that delayed funding for the Bujagali Dam.

Tough contest
Rival supporters accused Mr Nabeta of duping the people of Jinja and appropriating 300 acres of prisons land at Shs5,000 per acre to build an ICT park.

But Mr Museveni said: “I did not see sense in having all that land to people who had committed crime to grow potatoes in Jinja town. Nabeta’s idea was good and I supported it.”

Meanwhile, Dr Besigye said there was no time to explain that NRM was a “government of thieves” but how to “clear the problem.”

He said NRM has nothing to offer and it was the time they are denied leadership at all levels.
