Medical officer charged with murder, now remanded

Court in Masaka has charged a medical doctor with the murder of two people and remanded him in custody until February 16, 2010. Dr Brasio Kabugo, an owner of private clinic in Masaka Town was presented before Masaka Chief Magistrate Moses Katorogo yesterday and charged with murdering Daryl Namugenyi, a resident of Senyange village in Masaka Municipality and David Kanyaaga of Kimanyi village in Kyabakuza Division, Masaka on January 24 this year.

It is alleged that on that day, Dr Kabugo was at a night club in Masaka town in the company of Namugenyi. It is further alleged that the two had a quarrel and that Namugenyi chose to leave the night club, rushed out and quickly asked Kanyaaga, a motorcycle rider, to take her home.

The timing
This is said to have angered Dr Kabugo who immediately pursued the two in his car and reportedly knocked them down at around 5.10am on Sunday. Kanyaaga died on the spot while Namugenyi died soon after arrival at Kitovu Hospital. Police arrested Dr Kabugo soon afterwards and he has been in police custody since then.

In court yesterday, Dr Kabugo was not allowed to say anything after the state prosecutor, Mr Yasin Ramadhan Ntaalo, read out the charges. He had no lawyer in court. He was told that the charges against him were to be heard by the High Court.
