In Summary

About 27 people died and scores of others left nursing injuries following the riots that broke out after the central government blocked the Kabaka from visiting Kayunga.

Kayunga

Kayunga District, where a section of the minority Banyala seeking to break away from the Mengo governed institution is part of Buganda, President Museveni has said.

Mr Museveni, however, said the indigenous people known as the Banyala are free to enjoy and adopt a culture that best suits them. “Kayunga is part of Buganda and Uganda as per the law and can not secede from Buganda. But if the indigenous people (Abanyala) consent on having a cultural institution it is okay. The Constitution is very clear and all this is accepted,” the President said on Thursday during his maiden visit to the district since the September 2009 riots.

Big lie
“It is a lie for people to say that Kayunga will secede from Buganda. It is absurd that these allegations are made by literate people just to disrupt peace and development,” President Museveni said. “Such unnecessary talking should not divert you from working towards increasing household incomes because this is the basis of development of our economy”.

The President, who made a tour of National Agricultural Advisory Services (Naads) programme in the sub-counties of Busaana, Kangulumira and Kayunga Town Council, also addressed a number of rallies and other impromptu stopovers where he met jubilant crowds before receiving over 50 people who defected from opposition parties to the NRM party.

The President said household income would not only benefit the people earning it but the entire economy will stand to benefit through payment of taxes, purchase of locally made and imported commodities.
