Muslims have reacted angrily to a petition challenging the legality of polygamy, saying it infringes on their religious beliefs.

Banning polygamy is uncalled for since those in such marriages enjoyed them, said Hajj Nsereko Mutumba, spokesman for the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.

“Muslims are allowed to marry more than one wife so long as one has the capability to look after them. People are only equal before the law but not in responsibilities,” he added.
Mr Mutumba was reacting to a petition filed by human rights organisation, Mifumi (U), that wants the polygamous marriages declared unconstitutional.

Mifumi claims polygamy violates the right to equality guaranteed in the Constitution.
