Isingiro

Over 1,000 Ugandans who were expelled from Tanzania have received food relief from the Adventist Development Relief Agency, a local organisation.

The refugees are camped at Kikagati Sub-county in Isingiro District. The relief agency gave them 70 bags of posho and 30 bags of beans over the weekend. They are part of about 5,000 Ugandans who were chased from Karagwe in Tanzania wbetween 2003 and 2006.

Authorities in Tanzania forced them out on grounds that they entered the country illegally and were threatening government-owned grazing areas. The returnees who are mainly cattle keepers had lived there for several decades. “We felt we share with them this little we have because these people don’t have land. They toil to get what to eat,” said Mr Booker Ajouga, ADRA’s spokesman.
