Former Buganda Katikkiro Dan Muliika has been elected the leader of Ggwanga Mujje International, an organisation agitating for a federo form of governance in Uganda. His primary mission is to educate Ugandans about federalism and political freedoms. Mr Muliika, according to a press release by the coordinator of Ggwanga Mujje, Dr Fulgence Lugemwa, was elected during a meeting in Massachusetts USA.
Delegates at the conference mainly comprised Ugandans from New York, New Jersey, Illinois and California. “Human rights are not for negotiation; they inherently belong to the people. The right to self-determination is recognised by international law,” Mr Mulika said last week in his acceptance speech.
He said: “Therefore, we cannot beg the leaders to give us a federal system of government. We must assert our right as a sovereign people to determine our destiny and the system of government we want and deserve.” Mr Muliika said a federal system of government is the best solution to Uganda’s political, social and economic problems.
Delegates vowed to re-enact their previous resolutions to raise money that will be mainly spent directly on financing civic education in Buganda and in other parts of Uganda about the benefits of federal governance for the whole of Uganda.
Mr Muliika was dropped as Katikkiro by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi in 2007. He was replaced by Mr Emmanuel Ssendawula. He is known to have been critical of the central government and whed, a group of Ggwanga Mujje youth demonstrated against the development at Bulange, the seat of Buganda government. Ggwanga Mujje International joins the Uganda Federo Alliance headed by Lubaga North MP Beti Kamya, to agitate for federo in Uganda.
