The reconstruction of Kasubi royal tombs started yesterday with a call to the kingdom loyalists to support the effort.
The kingdom’s Deputy Information Minister, Mr Medard Sseggona, said the initial stage will involve the restoration of the Muzibu-Azaalampanga, the shell that houses Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s forefathers and their regalia, the tombs attendants’ cultural homes and part of the perimeter wall.
“ The initial stage will take six months. We call upon the general public to support the project through providing the necessary materials and the financial support. We should remain united and focused,” Mr Sseggona said yesterday at Mengo. Last week, Buganda Premier John Baptist Walusimbi said at least Sh334 million has been generated from local and foreign donations.
Expensive task
PriceWaterHouseCoopers, an international audit firm, will manage the funds. The 130-year-old royal tombs, which housed remains of four fallen Buganda kings, went up in flames on March 16.
Eleven committees have been appointed to oversee the project.
The tombs house the remains Muteesa I, Daniel Mwanga II, Daudi Chwa II and Sir Edward Muteesa II, all fallen kings of Buganda.
The reconstruction plan is expected to consume not less that Sh10 billion. The tombs are also one the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Africa.
