Detained Sembabule police officers probed over missing case files

MASAKA- Two police officers attached to Mateete Police Station in Sembabule District, who were arrested last week on orders of Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura are being probed over alleged mismanagement of case files among other matters, police have said.

According to the Police Spokesperson, Mr Emilian Kayima, the police officers have since been handed over to the Police Professional Standards Unit, pending investigations.

“The officers were suspended from work and arrested on orders of the IGP after several administrative complaints including mismanaging case files among others,” Mr Kayima said in a telephone interview on Wednesday, adding that after investigating the matter, PSU would come up with a report.

However, it is still unclear which case files the officers mismanaged.
The officers being investigated are; Mr Muhammad Kajoba, the former officer in charge of Mateete Police Station and another only identified as David who was in charge of crime investigations at the same station.

Mr Kayima also refuted claims that the officers were arrested for shielding machete-wielding thugs who are terrorising Masaka Sub-Region.

“We want to clarify that these officers are not in any way connected to the attacks or the attackers as it has been alleged,” Mr Kayima said.

Allegations connecting the duo to the New Year’s Day attacks on residents of Kisaaka, Kisojjo, Kyabagoma and Kyamabaale in Bukomansimbi and Lwengo Districts which saw four people killed and scores injured, started circulating shortly after their arrest.

Gen Kayihura who camped in the sub region to investigate the crime did not reveal why the cops were arrested, creating room for speculations.

Speaking to residents of Lwengo early this week, Gen. Kayihura , who avoided commenting about the arrests, said he would not entertain weak and lazy officers because they were “tainting the image of the force.”

Gen Kayihura told residents to report to him “all lazy officers.”
In a related development, the IGP transferred the Bukomansimbi District Police Commander, Mr Patrick Ameru, who had spent a few months in the area, and replaced him with Mr Karoli Isabirye from Kampala.
