‘We want better treatment’

Nurses and midwives claim their efforts are never appreciated.

Nurses and midwives want to be appreciated and recognised for their services rather than being insulted.

The chairperson of the union, Ms Jennet Obuli, said nurses and midwives play a vital role in realising the safety of lives and should be rewarded for it. “We work under terrible conditions and there is no body to protect us in cases of any problem, but instead we are just insulted,” she said during the Nurses and Midwives Day celebrations in Gulu Town at the weekend.

The celebrations were under the theme “Equity and Access to Healthcare.” Ms Obuli said if the Millennium Development Goals are to be achieved, deliberate efforts like recruitment of more nurses and increment of salaries should be enforced.

Recently MPs on the Parliamentary Health Committee recommended that the salaries for nurses, midwives and theatre nurses be doubled. Most of them earn between Shs250,000 and Shs400,000.
