Robert Mugabe’s surprise announcement of his resignation Tuesday came as lawmakers debated an impeachment motion against him in a joint sitting of parliament.

Mr Mugabe, 93, had previously refused to resign despite last week's military takeover, and days of protests. Below is a sample of social media comments from our readers.

Wamono Cassim Abubakar: Finally, this is maturity. Africa is now relieved of one of the oldest presidents. Let the others in the same bracket follow his example immediately without causing any bloodshed.

Ace Call: The wild celebrations of the poor Zimbabweans are much akin to crazy celebrations of football fans after a non-performing manager has been sacked even though the team still faces relegation and is filled with old-out-of-form and poorly skilled players. The sorry thing is Mnangagwa is just like Mugabe albeit abit younger. Foolishness on a grand scale

Rogers Walakira: Wooowww...have been waiting for so long, finally God has made it.

Edgar Muhwezi: No man is bigger than the nation when people are tired. Who next?

Ntamuheza Augustine: Finally dictators in Africa are shedding off one by one till the turn of my favourite president.

Tonny Collins: Thanks Papa but please continue with your hilarious quotes.

Sharif Bin Ibrahim: I have really liked that style. Hoo no bloodshed, no teargas no bad thing done to da poor vivilians. Woww, l wish it also happens in a certain East African country ohh.

Wats Chambers South African states understand what politics is, ie Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe, unlike East African states.

Solo De O Zimbabwe has set a precedent of course which doesn't sound appealing to our own.

Davis Isabs: To God be the glory at last guys can have peace from heaven because this is what happens when hell is on your side pressing people through a single human being created by God.

Solomon Solomon: Some veterans in Uganda should also give Muzee house arrest and then force him to resign. The bad thing is that the army n police are full of A... and K... names

Generous Idiiro Banks: In this world people should know that everything has its own time. But greedy people are just forced to leave the plate of meat with soup. I know that Muzei has not done it in a good faith if hadn't intelligent army of Zimbabwe to open their eyes broadly. I wish it happens here in Jinja the whole country will celebrate. Ecclesiastes 3:3

Nkalubo Moses: That doesn't make sense we need to hear something different: "Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, 74, has finally resigned as Ugandan President.

Lukungu Charles: A good leader Robert Mugabe

Naigede Nnusu Aggrey: God is great....can't wait for M7

Wamono Cassim Abubakar: Finally, this is maturity. Africa is now relieved of one of the oldest presidents. Let the others in the same bracket follow his example immediately without causing any bloodshed.

Evangelist Ocen Emmanuel: A mixture of a sword and diplomacy in the 'crucible' of politics has finally given rise to a 'concoction' that would help Africa to get rid of 'life presidents.'

Andrew Lugemwa: He should not be left to just go Scott free!!! The government should reclaim all [his] property outside Zimbabwe.

Mwesigwa Nelson: Congs to the people of Zimbabwe and Mugabe the man himself. For us in Uganda we are just building our new kingdom of Rwakitura.

Anywar Ben Chris: Zimbabwe army has proved that a bloodless could is an effective means of changing a government under autocratic authority than elections lacking credibility.

Steve Kayijuka: Who knows maybe we shall see this happening in the near future in one of the great EAC nations. Uncle Bob is a mixture of dictator and charismatic leader

Nash Shabbe: Attention to all teachers of Social Studies (SST PLE) the answer to Question 5 on your marking guide has changed. Uncle Bob Gabriel Mugabe isn't the President of Zimbabwe.

Ngabire Gerald: Well done his Excellency Robert Mugabe. You really did a great job to Zimbabwe and Africa as whole though in the end you wanted to cling on power. You'll forever be a Hero.

Francis Obua: Congrat Mugabe God bless U and he should add for u another 93 years and all the African leaders must learn this a bit.

Mabeere Ga Ga Ndegeya: Wow sounds great Its better we bring Zimbabwe citizens in Uganda ffe tugende ewabwe because for them their more determined basobola okutukolera nga ewabwe bwebakooze.

Shem Love: Dear Lord..... Please put some Sense into our Ugandan President to do the same at least before the end of this year 2017....I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, AMEN

Masera Geoffrey: It is only for great and humble leader to resign. Mugabe, you have given your country a great Christmas

Wilson Mukundane: I forgive you Gabriel all that you wronged the people of Zimbabwe and us other Africans for leaving your country in peace not in pieces. To the army of Zimbabwe, I offer a bull to slaughter. I just admire the way you have done your thing.

Tim Tavuga: Welcome to the jaws of ICC!!!!

Lwasa Banks: Cong's but are some people aware? Thanks Mugabe for refusing #museveni’s wrong advice. See you in hell.
