Non-teaching staff in public universities have called off a sit-down strike they had started on Monday after meeting the State Minister for Finance, Mr David Bahati in Kampala.

The non-teaching staff were demanding equal distribution of the salary structure which the ministry of Public Service effected on 1st July.

The salary enhancement was approved three years ago but it is being implemented effective this year. This implies that the non-teaching staff will receive 23 per cent of the approved structure.

According to Jackson Betama, the Chairman Public Universities Non-Teaching Staff Executive Forum, a cleaner in Makerere University will this month earn a gross pay of Shs740, 000, in Kyambogo University cleaners will earn a gross of Shs940, 000 while the worker in Mbarara University will earn a gross of Shs980, 000.

Other non-teaching staff will earn similar salaries as lecturers and professors depending on rank and position.
