Kampala- Close to 100 babies were born in several hospitals in Kampala on the first day of 2014.

Mulago National Referral Hospital recorded the highest births with 27 deliveries recorded by Wednesday afternoon.

At Naguru Hospital, 13 babies were born followed by Kibuli Hospital where 12 deliveries were recorded. At Kawala Health Centre, 11 deliveries were registered while Kiruddu Health Centre registered 10 babies. At Namuwongo Health Centre IV, nine babies were born while at Lubaga Hospital, two births were recorded.

Meanwhile, Dr Josephine Apinyo, the area manager, New Mulago Hospital Wing, says more women are failing to space children because they are shunning family planning services.

“Our records shows that many mothers conceive again before the previous child has made a year. This is worrying because at least a child should be followed by another after two years,” she said.

Dr Apinyo said Mulago Hospital offers free family planning services, but mothers are reluctant to utilise them.
