KAMPALA. Over 100 people suspected to be criminals at the city carnival are to spend Uganda’s 55th Independence Day in police cells in Kampala Metropolitan Police Area.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Mr Emilian Kayima, said the 100 people were arrested over several offences including pickpocketing, theft and assault.

“They will remain in our cells until tomorrow (Tuesday) when we carry out screening,” Mr Kayima said.
On Sunday, Kampala Capital City Authority held its annual city carnival that attracted hundreds of thousands revellers.

Mr Kayima said police disorganised the criminals using their officers, who had been deployed in strategic areas.
“Largely, the event was peaceful,” he said.
The number of those arrested in this year’s carnival was half of those arrested last year.
Due to the huge numbers, at least 60 cases of missing children were reported.
However, only six missing children were found by the police and they are currently at Central Police Station.
