After spending five nights on remand at Luzira Prison, 18 Makerere University students accused of taking part in last week’s strike, yesterday regained their freedom after being granted a cash bail of Shs100,000 each.

Each of their 39 sureties were ordered to execute a non-cash of Shs10 million before being cautioned to make sure that the students attend court whenever they are needed or else risk having their property attached or sent to Luzira.
The students face similar charges with the area councillor, Mr Bernard Luyiga, who was however, released on bail last week since he needed medical treatment after he was reportedly assaulted by the police while arresting him.
The matter was fixed for hearing on March 26 and 28 as investigations into the matter were complete.
Last week, the students protested the proposed 60 per cent fees payment by private sponsored students by mid next month.
They looted merchandise from the neighbouring business centres such as Kikooni and Wandegeya.
