Kampala. More than 190 people were arrested during the annual Kampala City festival on Sunday.
Mr Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, said 183 suspects were arrested over order offences, three over robbery, four over mobile phone theft and eight over general theft, including assaulting female revellers.
“They (suspects) are being screened to enable suspects without any serious criminal linkages get released or bailed, and the rest charged in court, ” he said.
Mr Enanga was addressing a weekly national security press conference at the police headquarters in Naguru, a Kampala suburb.
He said the operations were aimed at ensuring that those who intended to cause trouble within the city were prohibited from doing so.

The Kampala Capital City Authority spokesperson, Mr Peter Kauju, told Daily Monitor yesterday that police had informed them that over 120 people had been arrested in connection with pickpocketing and other petty offences.
“We are happy that we pulled off a very successful event and we thank the sponsors who raised the Shs850 million that was used to organise the event,” he said.
He added that hundreds of thousands of people are estimated to have graced the Sunday event compared to a smaller number of people who attended last year.

“We have noticed that the expectation is going high every year and thus we are going to start planning for next year’s event soon enough. We feel honoured because even people from neighbouring countries such as Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda witnessed the event,” said Mr Kauju.
Kampala City Festival was started three years ago and draws scores to Kampala every first Sunday of October.
