2 Luweero police bosses suspended

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said they are investigating a case of public disorder against their officers.

Kampala- The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, has suspended two senior officers in Luweero District over an incident in which opposition leaders were tear gassed after the Democratic Party candidate was nominated.

Savannah Regional Police Commander, Mr Richard Mivule and the district police commander, Mr Ninsiima Godfrey, were allegedly in charge of the force that tear gassed Ms Brenda Nabukenya, the DP candidate for Luweero Woman MP by-election on Monday.

“The director of operations, Assistant Inspector General of Police Grace Turyagumanawe, has been directed to oversee the policing of the Luweero by-election,” Gen Kayihura said.
During the incident, police said the opposition leaders had defied directives by attempting to pass through Luweero Town after Ms Nabukenya’s nomination.

The DP candidate is contesting with NRM’s Ms Rebecca Nalwanga and two independents.
Court nullified Ms Nabukenya’s election, citing irregularities.
