22 confirmed dead in Kiryandongo bus accident

KIRYANDONGO. 22 people have been confirmed dead in the Friday night accident which happened in Kiryandongo district.
The accident involved a Gaaga Bus registration number UAK 562 L and a cargo lorry registration number UAT 088 J / UAT 321 M while the third vehicle was a tractor registration number UAU 872 M.
The bus traveling from Lira district to Kampala hit the tractor from its rear before it rolled and collided with an oncoming cargo lorry transporting crates of beer.
The incident happened in Nanda village, some 12 kilometers from Karuma Township in Nyamasha Parish, Mutunda Sub County, Kiryandongo district.

Fifteen people were injured in the accident which happened at about 8PM and disrupted traffic on Gulu - Kampala highway for three hours.
ASP Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine region Police spokesperson says investigations indicate that the accident resulted from the tractor traveling without lights and speeding.
Rescuers backed by Police retrieved some bodies from the wreckage of the vehicles while some were trapped inside or underneath the vehicles.
MP Odonga Otto and Gilbert Olanya were part of the rescue mission.
Fourteen people hospitalized in Kiryandongo Referral Hospital are Joel Wasswa, Kintu Majid, Auma Gloria, Joshua Amonga, David Mutebi, Tenga Joshua, Okello Santos, Nuwangi Caleb, Robson Okello, Lauryn Amony, Simon Ojok, Nathan, Joshua Agonya and Jackson Agona.
Majority of those hospitalized escaped with fractures and head injuries. Assistant Commissioner of Police Deo Obura, the Albertine regional police commander visited the accident scene alongside Assistant Superintendent of Police Irene Chelengat at about 1am before visiting those in hospital.
