KAMPALA- The police have approved 354 places around the country for display of fireworks during the New Year celebrations.

Police said fireworks display will commence at midnight and last for only five minutes.
Ms Judith Nabakooba, the police spokesperson, said: “The fireworks materials to be displayed must not be more than 1.5mm calibre.”

Some of the major places approved to display fireworks are: Serena Hotel and Kololo Airstrip in Kampala, Mayor’s Garden in Jinja Town, Agip Motel in Mbarara Municipality, Hill Top Hotel in Arua Municipality, and Bhooma Hotel in Gulu Municipality.

Ms Nabakooba said: “No one who hasn’t been given permission will be allowed to display fireworks or burning tyres in the middle of the road or anywhere.”

She warned motorists against drunk-drinking, saying those caught in the act would be prosecuted.
“I will like to send a warning to drivers who drink alcohol beyond the limit and drive on New Year. We shall arrest you and you celebrate it in jail,” Ms Nabakooba said.

Police cautioned people to be vigilant during the New Year celebrations.
